Thiruvananthapuram: CPM does not wish to destroy the opposition front in Kerala, said state secretary MV Govindan here in a press conference on Friday.

But there is no point in being sad about the self-destruction of the UDF thanks to their own political stance, he added.

On a question about inviting the Muslim League to LDF, Govindan said matters like political alliance cannot be decided at once. However, he added that CPM does not view the IUML as a communal party.

IUML is a democratic organisation that organises the community. We have criticised them whenever they aligned secretly with SDPI and other communal forces. But IUML has been part of the Left in the past. In 1967, they shared power with us under the leadership of EMS Namboothiripad, Govindan noted.

The political position of CPM will be based on the national situation. There is nothing wrong in aligning with anyone who stands against communal forces in the national political scenario, he added.
