Covid situation dire after Onam; 6 districts report high positivity rate
Thiruvananthapuram: The health department has evaluated that the Covid situation in the state became severe after Onam festival. The Covid positivity rate increased in 6 districts while in three districts the doubling interval decreased.
The department also urged public to identify the symptoms and undergo testing. Government had earlier assessed the possibility of increased Covid transmission after Onam.
The infection positivity rate has increased considerably in Thiruvananthapuram, Kollam, Kottayam, Kannur and Kasaragod. In the state capital the percentage of positive cases among those undergoing tests increased to 13.6 from 9.9 after Onam while in Kannur it went from 8.2 to 12.6 percent. In Malappuram the positivity rate is 16 percent. However, this is lower than that of August last week.
Meanwhile, the interval for doubling the number of infections decreased in Kollam and Idukki.
The report by health department urged to increase the number of tests per day. It also asked people to identify the symptoms including inability to identify odour and undergo testing. Also, the effectiveness of health system at regional level should be strengthened, it further said.
