Thodupuzha: Allegations have been raised against health department claiming that the department instructed COVID patients to walk several kilometres by covering themselves in sheets so that nobody would notice them. A family has started protesting on the street against this.

The incident happened in Injikkadu area of Vandipperiyar in Idukki. It is not possible for ambulance or other vehicles to reach the area. Around 30 people from the area have tested positive for COVID-19. The area was declared a containment zone.

The family alleged that authorities asked the patients to reach a place, where ambulance could come, in their private vehicles. People without private vehicles were told to walk to the distance.

5 people from the family tested positive on different occasions. They were also asked to arrive at the place where ambulance could reach. However, when older people found it hard to walk to the area, locals demanded for a vehicle to pick them up. This was rejected by the health authorities. Following this, the family started protesting. However, the family decided to go on a hunger strike after health workers filed a police complaint against one of the family members.

Health department said that ambulance cannot reach the area as it is at high altitude and that private vehicles were not available due to COVID scare.
