COVID exemptions removed; HC orders prisoners to go back to jails

The court directed that the prisoners who are currently on parole should report at prisons within four weeks. The banks have been granted permission to continue the recovery procedures adhering to the directions of the supreme court.

Kochi: The high court cancelled the relaxation of rules allowed for prisoners due to the COVID situation. The ban on bank recovery procedures also was lifted. The court had allowed the relaxations in this regard on March 25, 2020.

The full bench headed by Chief Justice S Manikumar pointed out in the order that the relaxations are lifted as COVID restrictions have been limited and the courts and other institutions have started functioning normally. Apart from the chief justice, Justice C T Ravi Kumar and Justice Shaji P Chaly also were part of the bench.

The prisoners who were out on parole and those on remand were exempted from the rules. Also the court considered the COVID situation while considering bail plea too. All these relaxations have been removed now.
