COVID-19: Spike continues in Kerala with record 138 cases on Monday; 88 test negative

It is for the fourth consecutive day that the state is reporting a record number of cases in a single day.

Thiruvananthapuram: Kerala reported 138 new COVID-19 cases on Monday, Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan said in an official press release. Meanwhile, 88 patients have recovered from the disease.

This is the highest ever cases reported within 24 hours in the state and it is for the fourth consecutive day that the state is reporting a record number of cases in a single day.

Out of the 138 cases today, Malappuram has the highest number of cases with 17. There are 16 new cases in Palakkad, 14 in Ernakulam, 13 each in Kollam and Kottayam, 12 each in Alappuzha and Thrissur, 11 in Thiruvananthapuram, 9 in Kasaragod, 5 each in Kozhikode and Wayanad, 4 each in Pathanamthitta and Idukki and 3 in Kannur.

Out of the 138 people who tested positive today, 87 returned from abroad (Kuwait – 43, UAE – 14, Qatar – 14, Saudi Arabia – 9, Oman – 4, Bahrain – 1, Russia – 1, Nigeria – 1). Meanwhile, 47 people came from other states (Maharashtra – 18, Tamil Nadu – 12, Delhi – 10, West Bengal – 2, Uttar Pradesh – 2, Karnataka – 1, Andhra Pradesh – 1, Punjab - 1).

Four persons contracted the disease through contact (2 in Idukki and 1 each in Thiruvananthapuram and Kottayam). The patient who contracted the virus in Thiruvananthapuram is a security officer at the Medical College Hospital there.

Out of the 88 persons who tested negative, 26 are from Malappuram (including 1 Thrissur native, 1 Palakkad native and 1 Alappuzha native), 18 are from Kannur (including 2 Kasaragod natives, 1 Kozhikode native and 1 Thrissur native), 11 are from Palakkad, 9 are from Ernakulam, 7 each are from Kozhikode and Kasaragod, 4 each are from Kottayam and Thrissur and 2 are from Idukki.

1,540 persons are currently undergoing the treatment in the state while 1,747 have recovered. 1,47,351 are under observation in the state out of which 1,45,225 are in home/institutional quarantine while 2,126 are in hospitals. 241 were admitted to hospitals on Monday.

As many as 4,734 samples were tested on Monday. As of today, 1,85,903 samples, including routine, augmented, sentinel, pooled sentinel, C.B.Nat and TrueNat samples, have been sent for testing. Out of which the results of 2,266 samples are awaited. As part of sentinel surveillance, 38,502 samples were collected until Monday. Out of this, 37,539 came out negative.
