Thiruvananthapuram: A COVID-19 patient who escaped from the Medical College here the other day, committed suicide after being taken back to the hospital, on Wednesday.
Anadu native Unni (33) had hanged himself inside the isolation ward using clothes around 11.30 am on Wednesday. He was taken to the Intensive Care Unit but died soon after. Unni's latest test result had come out negative.
The coronavirus patient had escaped from the isolation centre at Thiruvananthapuram Medical College on Tuesday. He reached his home at Anadu after travelling in a bus and an auto rickshaw. However, he was stopped by local residents. After a long effort, health workers managed to take him back to the Thiruvananthapuram Medical College.
Health workers had stated that he contracted the virus after he went to Tamil Nadu to buy liquor. He was admitted to the hospital on May 28 after he fell down unconscious while drinking with his friends.
He had shown severe withdrawal symptoms during the past few days. He had not been cooperating with health workers at the hospital.
