Thiruvananthapuram: In a major move, 1,091 roads in the state were brought under the new project that makes the original contractors responsible for maintenance as well. It will hopefully ensure timely maintenance of PWD roads in the state.

Display boards with information including phone numbers of the contractor, engineer and the length of the road were installed for a stretch of 3,623.05 km. Each board costs Rs 5,000.

MLAs of the locality inaugurated the project in their constituencies. The first display board in the state was installed on the Golf Link road in Thiruvananthapuram. In the Manjeri division, only 20 roads are remaining to be covered under the project. The contractors are responsible for maintaining the Bitumen Macadam and Bitumen Concrete (BMBC) roads and concrete roads for three years and other black-topped roads for two years.

As of now, the Idukki division tops in the project bringing 480.86 km under it. The Moovattupuzha division, with 111.90 km of roads, is at the bottom of the table.
