Pathanamthitta: A driver and conductor of KSRTC-SWIFT bus skipped duty and absconded by switching off their phones, leaving a group of commuters stranded for nearly four hours.

There were 25 commuters including PSC exam candidates. The bus which was supposed to leave the depot by 5:00 PM left only by 9:30 PM.

The driver and conductor absconded from duty from 4:00 PM. Though officials concerned tried to contact them multiple times, the phones were switched off.

Exasperated over the delay, commuters raged and staged a sit-in at the depot. Due to this, some other bus services from the depot were delayed. Passengers who have booked the bus from other boarding points were also left in utter confusion.

The disagreements of KSRTC workers’ unions with government over constitution of the agency KSRTC-SWIFT rippled in the incident as the KSRTC drivers were unwilling to operate the bus during contingency. KSRTC drivers maintained a stand that drivers of KSRTC-SWIFT operate the service themselves.

Later, depot authorities intimated Pathanapuram depot. Fortunately, two employees from that depot agreed to come and the matter was resolved. However, the service was delayed by four and half hours.
