Kochi: The Kerala high court has stayed the state government's order giving reservation for Christian Nadar community. The government’s decision to include the community in Other Backward Class (OBC) category is legally invalid, the court made it clear.

The state government has no right to expand the OBC list, but only the President has the authority to do it, the court pointed out. The court also stated in the interim order that the state government’s action is against the supreme court verdict in Maratha case.

The high court made it clear that it will hear the petitions questioning the government’s order including Christian Nadar community in OBC list. Detailed hearing on this will be held in the coming days.

The government took the crucial political decision ahead of the assembly elections to include Christian Nadar community in OBC category and this helped them in the polls.
