Clashes erupt over unloading of ration items in Kozhikode, 3 injured
Elathur: A dispute over the unloading of ration items at West Hill Central Warehouse here ended up in clashes. Three workers in the warehouse were beaten up. Deepesh, Pranoob, and Pramod hailing from Naduthuruthy were admitted to a private hospital. The clashes erupted between the contract workers of civil supplies and the warehouse workers.
Due to space constraints in a private godown in Pooladikunnu, a load of rice was brought to the warehouse under government order. There is a condition that the rice of civil supplies arriving at the central warehouse should be unloaded by both contract workers and the warehouse workers in the ratio of 50:50. However, the contract workers blocked the lorries, demanding that they should be allowed to unload the whole rice as usual.
The dispute later turned into a physical confrontation between both parties. Meanwhile, the contract workers stormed into the warehouse and attacked the warehouse workers who were unloading rice which came in for distribution within the North Rationing limit. The issue was soon brought under control by a police unit from Vellayil. The Regional Manager of Civil Supplies ordered that the rice brought from Pooladikunnu be taken to a private godown in Vellayil.
There have been allegations that the officials are using contract workers to transfer the rice that arrives at the warehouse into a private godown. An inspection conducted by the Supplyco at the godown had found out that 20 quintals of rice for delivering to ration shops had been misplaced.
