Clashes at Sabari Peedam after Karma Samithi activists block woman
Sabarimala: Clashes occurred at Sabari Peedam here in connection with blocking a woman who arrived to have darshan at the Lord Ayyappa temple. A complaint arose that the Police Special Officer manhandled Sabarimala Karma Samithi activist Ganesh (32), a native of Manjadikkara in Changanassery. The man was admitted in Pampa hospital and later shifted to Kottayam Medical College.
A woman from Chennai was blocked by Sabarimala Karma Samithi activists at Marakkoottam by 8.45 pm on Monday suspecting that she was aged below 50 years. When she was asked to show her ID cards, she said furiously that she has been showing the ID proofs since Nilakkal and cannot repeat it any more.
With this, an argument took place between them and a team of police led by Sannidhanam Police Special Officer Sujith Das arrive at the scene. Police found those who blocked the woman at Sabari Peedam and when asked them to leave the place, it resulted in further clashes. Ganesh was manhandled amid the clashes, it is alleged.
However, SO Sujith Das said that he had not beaten up anyone, but only removed the visuals of the conversation with police recorded by a man on his phone. Police also said that the woman who was blocked at the temple was 55 years old. The police have recorded her statement.
Meanwhile, six women from Andhra Pradesh, who arrived at Sabarimala as part of a tour package, were blocked at Marakkoottam and sent back on Monday at noon. As per the ID cards given by the tour company, their age was marked as above 50 years.
But when Sabarimala Karma Samithi activists questioned them, the women revealed their real age and all of them were aged below 50 years. When they were convinced of the situation in Sabarimala, the women returned.
Four young women had arrived at the hill shrine on Sunday night. They also were sent back by the Karma Samithi activists. Many women keep coming to Sabarimala as part of tour packages.
