CI Sunu promoted while undergoing departmental investigation in rape case

Kochi: Beypore coastal CI PR Sunu, who was taken into custody on Sunday over a gang rape complaint, is an accused in several cases including sexual assault. He was promoted as CI while there were pending criminal cases and departmental investigations against him. He was jailed in another rape case while he was an SI.

Sunu is reportedly undergoing around eight departmental investigations and punishments.

He was taken into custody based on a gangrape complaint filed by a housewife at the Thrikkakara police station. A team of Thrikkakara police reached Beypore coastal police station on Sunday morning and took Sunu into custody. He was later transferred to a secret location for questioning.

The woman, who was living in a rented house in Thrikkakara, filed the complaint with the Ernakulam DCP. In her complaint, the woman said that five people, including Sunu, raped her. Women cell SI took her statement, following which the CI was taken into custody.

The woman’s husband is an ex-serviceman. Sunu met the woman when her husband was serving a sentence for extorting money over the promise of a job. He met the woman through a friend of her husband. Sunu came close to her, promising to help save her husband from the case.

The woman’s domestic help and her husband’s friend are among the five accused in the case. Both are in police custody.

In 2021, when he was working at the Mulavukad station, Sunu was taken into custody for raping a BTech graduate with a promise of marriage. He reportedly established closeness with the woman when she came to the station to file a complaint, took her to different places and raped her.

The central police registered case and he was arrested after the high court denied bail. Departmental action was taken against Sunu, who was remanded. Earlier too, similar complaints had surfaced against the CI.
