Mar George Alencherry, Supreme Court of India

New Delhi: Major Archbishop of Syro-Malabar Church Cardinal George Alencherry on Friday faced a major setback in the Supreme Court verdict over the controversial church land deal case. The apex court dismissed Cardinal’s plea to quash the criminal cases against him.

The verdict was pronounced by a bench comprising Justice Dinesh Maheshwari and Justice Bela M Trivedi.

Cardinal had approached the Supreme Court seeking to cancel the legal proceedings in the case under the consideration of Kakkanad Magistrate Court. In the petition filed at the top court, Cardinal alleged that the complainant of the Syro Malabar church land deal case attempted to obtain a favourable verdict by approaching the court.
