Idukki: Child Welfare Committee has approached the court in connection with the child marriage reported from Idukki’s Edamalakkudy panchayat. According to reports, a 47-year-old man married a 15-year-old girl a month ago. However, the welfare body came to know about the matter recently only. The development comes after an inquiry on the matter.

It may be specifically noted that Edamalakkudy, is a tribal panchayat and the marriage reportedly happened as per tribal customs and traditions. The child’s mother and her third husband are the ones who allegedly facilitated the illegal marriage. The girl had been pursuing her education till last year and it was stopped for marriage, said reports. The person whom the girl married already has a wife and children, the reports noted.

The girl apparently has been living with the 47-year-old man for one month. It is not yet clear why the matter came to light late even when panchayat authorities are supposed to report such issues.

The Child Welfare Committee has approached the court to declare the marriage void.
