Idukki: Cheruthoni dam shutters will be opened on Saturday as the water level keeps rising in the reservoir due to the incessant rainfall in Idukki district for the last two days. Water level in both Idukki and Mullaperiyar dams is increasing.

Currently, the water level in Mullaperiyar dam is at 139.5 feet and in Idukki, it is 2398.46 feet. According to the rule curve, red alert will be issued when the water level reaches 2399.03 feet. It has been decided to open one shutter as a precautionary measure.

There is heavy rain alert in the coming days and the water level may go up further. As the water level at Vaigai Dam has reached the maximum storage capacity, Tamil Nadu is unable to take water from the Mullaperiyar dam.

Upto 1 lakh litre per second is released from Idukki dam. So, the water level in Periyar is unlikely to change and the people need not panic, the authorities said. However, the people have to remain vigilant, the district administration warned.
