Chandy ridicules CPM on granting autonomous status to colleges
Thiruvananthapuram: Former Chief Minister Oommen Chandy has ridiculed the CPM and Kerala government for awarding autonomous status to 3 engineering colleges.
Chandy said that this is the latest example of the Marxist party changing their policy regarding an issue they fought against while they were in opposition. Ommen Chandy made his response through his Facebook page.
Autonomous status was granted to Rajagiri School of Engineering and Technology, Kochi, Saintgits College of Engineering, Kottayam and Mar Baselios College of Engineering and Technology, Thiruvananthapuram. While criticising the government, Chandy also welcomed the move to grant autonomous status to these institutions.
He also said that UDF government decided to begin autonomous colleges in the state at a time when there were no such institutions in Kerala and there were more than 500 autonomous colleges nationally. This was vehemently opposed by LDF by even trying to stop the UGC inspection. This was done with the help of teachers organisation.
UGC granted autonomous status to 18 aided colleges and 1 government college during the UDF tenure overcoming all protests. Nobody questioned the eligibility of the colleges chosen by the UGC team.
When those who voiced their protests against this came to power, they tried to suffocate the autonomous institutions through Universities. However, later they changed their policy and started granting autonomous status to colleges.
The left front has organised several unnecessary protests including anti- tractor protests, anti- computer protests and against taking loans from international financial institutions such as World bank and ADB bank. However, when they changed their policies years later, the state faced several backlashes.
Although the state is placed on top when it comes to public education system, our position is not so high when it comes to higher education. Tens of thousands of students migrate to other states and countries to get quality education. Chandy also added that the state can can give the opportunity for them to study here and all that requires is to function with a sense of reality.
