Chandy appointed AICC gen secy in-charge of Andhra
New Delhi: Senior leader and former chief minister Oommen Chandy has been appointed as the Congress in-charge of Andhra Pradesh. As part of reconstruction of the AICC, Congress president Rahul Gandhi has made key changes and appointed Chandy as the AICC general secretary of Andhra affairs.
He will replace Digvijay Singh, who is presently in charge of Andhra affairs.
Gaurav Gogoi has also been appointed as Congress in-charge of West Bengal and Andaman & Nicobar Islands. He will replace CP Joshi. Gogoi is son of fomer Assam chief minister Tarun Gogoi.
“The party appreciates the hard work and contribution of Shri Digvijaya Singh, who will be stepping down from his responsibility as AICC General Secretary in-charge of Andhra Pradesh,” statement from party general secretary Ashok Gehlot said.
He also said that the party appreciates the hard work and contribution of Dr C P Joshi, who will be stepping down from his responsibility as AICC General Secretary in-charge of West Bengal and Andaman & Nicobar Islands.
The changes will be enforced with immediate effect, the party said.
There were indications earlier that some leaders from Kerala will be elevated to national leadership as part of the AICC rejig. Oommen Chandy has been appointed as the General Secretary as part of the rejig.
The Congress had put up a poor show in Andhra in the last Assembly and Lok Sabha elections.
Oommen Chandy will have to shoulder the responsibility to strengthen the Congress for the next Lok Sabha elections. Apart from Oommen Chandy, two Congress leaders from Kerala are already AICC general secretaries. While KC Venugopal is in-charge of Karnataka, PC Chacko is in-charge of Delhi affairs.
