Thiruvananthapuram: Animal Welfare Board of India (AWBI) has issued a direction to district collectors to shut all slaughterhouses on April 3 in view of Mahavir Jayanti. The Kerala government has not yet responded in favour or against the letter received by the collectors.

The authorities are puzzled over the need to completely shut down all slaughterhouses as Mahavir Jayanti is not much celebrated in the state.

The slaughterhouses are often voluntarily closed during regional festivals in the state. However, no orders have been issued for this so far.

The birth of Lord Mahavir, who was the 24th Tirthankara of Jainism, has been celebrated as Mahavir Jayanti. The Jain community observes this day to spread peace, harmony and the teachings of Mahavir.
