Centre neglected the poor, no measures to strengthen MGNREGS: Oommen Chandy
Thiruvananthapuram: The central government has neglected the poor and the suffering in its Atma Nirbhar Bharat economic package to battle the damages caused by the COVID-19 outbreak, alleged former chief minister Oommen Chandy.
There are no measures to strengthen the Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Scheme (MGNREGS), he blamed.
The package has been prepared taking care to ensure there is no reduction in the income of the central government. All the liabilities have been transferred to banks in forms of loans. All other responsibilities have been transferred to the states, he added.
As global crude oil price dropped, they increased the price of petrol and diesel resulting in revenue of more than Rs 2 lakh crore to the central government treasury. These were the allowance for the public in reality, but they snatched it away.
The Kerala government is also following in the footsteps of the Centre. Apart from the budget, the state is not spending a single rupee for the welfare of the public. A financial package of Rs 20,000 crore was announced in the backdrop of COVID-19. But most it was allotted to pay off dues, he pointed out.
