CBI to probe Balabhaskar’s death
Thiruvananthapuram: The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) will investigate the death of noted violinist Balabhaskar who died after being injured in a road accident. The state government issued an official order regarding this on Monday.
It is reported that CBI will take over the case within a week from the Crime Branch.
Balabhaskar’s father CK Unni welcomed the government order.
"We felt that the Crime Branch probe team was prejudiced that this was nothing but a road accident, even when we pointed out to them a few doubts that we had. Then came the news that a few members in my son's music troupe were arrested in the gold smuggling case that took place through the airports here. After the accident took place, we felt his friends were keeping us away from everything and hence our doubts increased. So we wish now the CBI will unravel what really happened," said Unni.
Earlier, Balabhaskar’s father had visited Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan seeking CBI probe into his son’s death. But the Crime Branch investigation team asserted there is no mystery in the accident.
Suspicions arose after Balabaskar’s driver Arjun said the car was being driven by the musician at the time of the accident. But when the police approached Balabhaskar's wife Lekshmi for her statement, she said her husband was not driving.
The case had taken a turn after the arrest of Prakash Thampi by the Directorate of Revenue Intelligence (DRI) in a gold smuggling case. Thampi was the programme coordinator of Balabhaskar's shows and, according to the probe team, also the last person to call Balabhaskar before his car met with the accident.
Stage artiste Kalabhavan Soby’s revelations hinted mystery in the accident. He revealed about the suspicious things he saw at the accident spot, when he passed the area.
Balabhaskar, 40, was travelling with his wife and two-year-old daughter from Thrissur to the state capital, when their car met with an accident in the wee hours of September 25, 2018, on the outskirts of Thiruvananthapuram. While the daughter died on the spot, Balabhaskar passed away on October 2. His wife and driver escaped with injuries.
