Kannur: The incident where Devaswom Minister Radhakrishnan reportedly faced caste discrimination occurred at a temple in Payyanur. The incident took place on January 26 at the Nambyathra Koval, Shiva temple. MLA T.I Madhusoodanan was also present at the event.
The Minister was inaugurating the ‘nada panthal’ at the temple under the Devaswom Board. The priests of the temple lit the lamp first. One of the priest asked the other priest to hand over the lamp (deepam) to the Minister, however, the priest proceeded to place it on the floor. The Minister then refused to light the lamp.
With this, the temple executive officer Beena, took the lamp from the floor and handed it to the Minister but he refused to take it. Madhusoodanan also refused to participate in the symbolic lamp lighting.
Later on in his speech, the Minister spoke about the caste discrimination he has been facing since childhood and said that is why he refused to take the lamp from the floor. MLA Madusoodanan also criticised the actions of the priest.
Although the event took place in January, the Minister spoke about this incident while inaugurating the Velan Service Society state conference in Kottayam yesterday without mentioning the name of the temple.
