NSS demands to scrap caste-based reservation

Cherthala: The Nair Service Society (NSS), the influential forward caste organisation in the state, reiterated its position on the caste-based reservation.

Inaugurating a vegetarian restaurant run by taluk NSS union and Mannam Social Service Society at Cherthala here on Wednesday, NSS general secretary G Sukumaran Nair said, “Caste-based reservation should end and only economically backward people irrespective of caste should be entitled to reservation.”

He alleged that well-off people are swindling reservation benefits based on caste.

“Way back in 1958, Mannathu Padmanabhan, the founder-leader of the community demanded that caste-based reservations need to be disbanded. After 64 years, NSS has been trying for this. NSS will not step back even an inch from its demand for Economically Weaker Section (EWS) reservation,” he pointed out.

The move to topple the present EWS reservation will be countered, he added.

Meanwhile, many forward caste associations have been demanding to scrap caste-based reservations. However, according to constitutionalists the core idea of the reservation is ensuring equal representation and not poverty alleviation. The debate on the matter was in the limelight when Supreme Court recently upheld a 10 per cent EWS reservation among the unreserved category in admissions and jobs.

NSS earlier had approached the judiciary opposing caste-based reservation.
