Beypore: After a hiatus of 22 years, Commonwealth roofing tiles were exported to Singapore.

Reportedly, a total of 10,000 roofing tiles were shipped by Comtrust from Kochi Port to Singapore, following an order from Singapore's Landscape Engineering Pvt Ltd Company.

The roofing tiles have been manufactured at the Comtrust factories in Feroke and Puthiyara and are worth Rs 6.5 lakh.

The tiles were widely exported to Sri Lanka, African and Gulf countries and other neighbouring countries till 2000. However, the exports declined after regulations were imposed on clay mining.

Currently, tiles are manufactured only in factories at Puthiyara, Feroke and Star Tile Works in Kallai.

Apparently, demands for roofing tiles are on the rise in countries such as Tanzania, Nigeria and Gulf nations.

“If there is timely support from the part of the government, then the domestic sales of the tiles will also strengthen up”, said Comtrust officials.
