Thiruvananthapuram: The CPM has come out against the hartal announced by several organisations in protest of the Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA) on Tuesday.
In a press release, CPM state secretary Kodiyeri Balakrishnanan said “There are widespread protests against Citizenship Amendment Act. Both the government and the opposition are against CAA. Organisations staging hartals separately is equal to falling into the trap set by the BJP. This will create religious polarisation among the people. Those wishing to unite the people should distance themselves from the hartal.”
Earlier, Kanthapuram A P Aboobacker Musliyar had expressed his displeasure with the hartal announced on Tuesday. He told Mathrubhumi News that he thinks the hartal on Tuesday is unnecessary and that the announcement of the hartal was made in haste.
On Sunday, Kasaragod district police chief had clarified that no organisation had given a notice for the hartal on Tuesday and that it was against the law. The Youth League had also distanced itself from the hartal.
