Bypolls: Rain affects polling in Ernakulam, Konni registers highest turnout
Kochi: Despite heavy rains, polling is progressing well in four constituencies in Kerala on Monday except in Ernakulam. The unabated rains in Ernakulam district, which led to water logging and disruption of traffic, has adversely affected the voter turnout in the constituency.
Konni constituency witnessed the highest voter turnout among the five constituencies (58 percent) until 3.30 pm, while Ernakulam registered the lowest with 40.36 percent. Manjeswaram was a close second with 55.50 percent of the voters turning up to exercise their franchise. Vattiyoorkavu and Aroor registered 52 and 53.5 percent of polling respectively.
Meanwhile, the Chief Election Commissioner Teeka Ram Meena said he is closely monitoring the situation in Ernakulam and that the present situation does not demand postponement of the by-election. Meena further said that he has sought a report from the district collector on the matter.
Ernakulam district collector S Suhas responded that the authorities have done everything possible to ensure smooth voting in rain hit areas and that the present situation does not call for postponement of bypoll.
