Bypoll: Senior BJP leaders hesitate to contest in fear of 'financial burden'
Kochi: Key factor behind the senior BJP leaders’ decision to keep themselves out of the way of by-election in Kerala is shortage of money. What made them hesitate from contesting the election is that there won’t be any financial assistance for the bypoll expenses.
Though senior leaders had intentions to contest, the difficulty in finding sufficient funds for the election turned them back.
Nearly Rs 1 crore is needed for the election expense. Centre might give the candidates a maximum amount of Rs 15 lakhs. Since assembly elections are to be followed in Maharashtra and Haryana, even this amount is not sure.
After deducting the centre’s aid, individual candidate should find the rest of the money personally for the election. By the time, the candidate gets rid of the financial burden, the state will witness assembly election within two years.
Suppose, if the candidate tastes defeat, he might face a tough time to get a seat for the assembly election and furthermore the money for expense.
K Surendran who had a narrow defeat by 89 votes from Manjeswaram in the assembly election strongly denied his candidature for by-election. Suppose, if he is defeated in the by-election this will adversely affect his name and fame.
