Thiruvananthapuram: Reports indicate that building construction activities steeply declined in Kerala during the period of Covid 19. Compared to the previous year, at least 17.07 per cent drop has been recorded in 2020-21. A decrease of 21 per cent was spotted in rural areas, while 2.1 per cent declined in urban areas.
The construction of houses also dwindled by 19.5 per cent. As many as 3.56 lakh houses were built in the state in 2020-21. It was estimated as the lowest figure since 2015-16.
At least 4.29 lakh buildings were constructed in 2019-20. However, a shortage of 73,239 buildings was recorded in 2020-21. An average of 13 buildings were newly built within 1 kilometre area all over the state in 2020-21. Although, the same figure hit 23 in Thiruvananthapuram.
Out of the total, 2.68 lakh buildings are residences, while only the remaining 88,007 buildings are non-residential constructions.
