BSNL to witness largest ever mass retirement in history; 78559 to step down on Friday
Thrissur: Around 78559 employees of BSNL will retire on Friday, making it the largest mass retirement event in the country. This number of employees are stepping down under the Voluntary Retirement Scheme brought in by the revival package to tackle the financial crisis in the company.
The employees are retiring with one-month salary arrear. The salary that had to be disbursed in January first week has not been provided yet.
After the en masse retirement, there would be only 85344 employee left at the company. The central government had earlier said that the main reason for the crisis in BSNL was the number of employees which was at 1.63 lakh earlier.
The half amount of retirement allowance will be given before March 31 and the other half by June 30. The salary due will be provided in February, it is said.
A month to be back on track
It is reported that at least one month would be required for operations to be back to normal after such a large number of employees retire. The contract for functioning of exchanges and its maintenance would be outsourced. The procedures for calling tenders has just started.
The contract would be awarded at each SSA level. At present almost all the exchanges have lapses on repairing land phone issues.
Also the 4G spectrum announced in BSNL package has not begun. The initiatives to allocate more funds for the functioning has not begun yet. The loan of Rs 3000 crore has not been approved yet. Even though it was said a debenture of Rs 14000 crore would be issued, it was not done. Centre had informed both would be materialized by December 2019.
No need for anxiety
There is no point in worrying about mass retirement. It is very normal to have issues when such a big change takes place. The guidelines to overcome these issues have been suggested from the corporate office. After the mass retirement, there would be shuffling of employees. We are alert on not causing on any issue in telecom services, said S Devidasan, Kerala Circle Secretary, telecom Officers Association.
