Kasaragod: A village assistant at Muliyar here has been arrested by vigilance officials on Thursday for allegedly taking Rs 5,000 as bribe for accepting the land tax bound to be paid by an individual. Interestingly, the arrest happened on the same day when vigilance conducted an anti-corruption awareness session in the collectorate for officials.
The official is T Raghavan, a native of Chattanchal. The vigilance’s intervention came in wake of the complaint lodged by Asharaf, a native of Bovikanam.
Asharaf has been trying to pay the land tax for eight months. Raghavan was not accepting the payment and he allegedly demanded Rs 5,000 as bribe. Over the matter, Asharaf lodged a complaint with the vigilance.
The vigilance officials asked Asharaf to handover five notes of Rs 500 denomination powdered with phenolphthalein to Raghavan. Asharaf did as per the directions and following that vigilance officials intervened. The officials found the notes from the purse kept in Raghavan’s pocket. His hands turned pink in the solution test.
