Brahmapuram waste treatment: Govt gives more teeth to empowered committee

Kochi: Minister for Local Self-Governments MB Rajesh informed that the empowered committee formed to monitor the Brahmapuram waste treatment plant has been given broad powers.

The committee has been given powers under Section 24 (l) in the Disaster Management Act, 2005, he said.

It may be specifically noted according to Section 24 (l) in the Disaster Management Act, 2005, the entity can “take such steps as the Central Government or the State Government may direct in this regard or take such other steps as are required or warranted by the form of any threatening disaster situation or disaster.”

The empowered committee was formed after the Brahmapuram dumpyard fire incident. The committee comprises the district collector, deputy collector and 13 other high-level officials from the bodies concerned.
