Brahmapuram fire row: UDF stages blockade in front of Kochi Corporation office

Kochi: The opposition councillors are staging a blockade in front of the Kochi Municipal Corporation office in response to the police action during a protest event on Tuesday.

The blockade started around 5 am on Thursday and turned violent after police tried to stop the protesting councillors. On Tuesday, several UDF councillors were injured after police used force to control a protest event in front of the Corporation building.

KPCC president K Sudhakaran will inaugurate the blockade at 9 am. It will continue till 5 pm on Thursday. The councillors are of the view that they will not permit Corporation employees to attend the office.

The police have already informed the protestors that they would take steps to clear the way for people to enter the Corporation office. A verbal spat ensued after police attempted to disperse the protesters.

On Tuesday, opposition councillors protested in front of the Corporation office, demanding the Kochi mayor's resignation over the fire that broke out at the Brahmapuram waste plant. However, the protest turned ugly after police used force to evict protestors.
