Kochi: The Kerala High Court on Tuesday asked the Kochi Municipal Corporation not to sanction further amount to the waste plant contractor at Brahmapuram dump yard without its knowledge. The order related to this will be issued after seeking an explanation from the authorities concerned.
The court pointed out various laxities and put forth measures to be taken. The major ones are:
- Occupancy certificates have been issued to large buildings operating without a facility for waste management
- There should be a mechanism to segregate waste at the source itself
- The Pollution Control Board should collect the sample from water drawing points of the Periyar river and test it
- The collectors should restrain from signing the salary certificates of the officials who make lapses in waste management
