Brahmapuram fire: Clashes at Kochi Corporation as UDF councillors try to block mayor Anilkumar

Kochi: The municipal corporation office witnessed violent protests on Monday by opposition parties over alleged inaction by the local body that led to the mishap at the Brahmapuram waste treatment plant.

UDF councillors tried to stop mayor M Anilkumar from entering the office which resulted in violence. Police made way for Anilkumar into the office. The opposition councillors wore black dresses in protest.

Ernakulam District Congress Committee president Mohammed Shiyas led the protesters, who clashed with the police. CPM members also gathered outside the building to support LDF council members. The BJP is also protesting.

Congress alleged that the police resorted to targeted attacks on its councillors.

On March 2, a fire broke out in the dumping yard of the waste plant. More than 95 percent of the fire has been doused, according to the government. LDF alleges that previous UDF regimes in the corporation did nothing to solve the waste issue which resulted in the fire.
