Tanur: Malappuram DCC president VS Joy on Monday alleged that those who met with the boat accident in Malappuram were killed due to the negligence of authorities.

Taking to Facebook, Joy wrote, “The boat which capsized was not manufactured as per boat manual. Rather, it is a converted fishing boat. It was granted approval following intervention from the minister’s office.”

The leader added that the accident was the result of the legal system bowing down before an illegal system because the boat owner happens to be the brother of a CPM leader who is close to the minister of the area.

Meanwhile, Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan announced an ex-gratia of Rs 10 lakh each to the families of the deceased and said that the government will bear the treatment expenses of those injured in the mishap.

The double-decker boat ‘Atlantic’, which carried around 37 passengers capsized at Ottumpuram in Tanur, around 7 pm on Sunday, claiming the lives of at least 22 people.
