Blast at Vellarada village office in T’puram
Thiruvananthapuram: Seven officials sustained injuries and documents were completely gutted following a blast at Vellarada village office here on Thursday.
Village Assistant Venugopal, who sustained serious injuries has been admitted to Thiruvananthapuram medical college while the rest of the injured have been admitted to Neyyattinkara taluk hospital.
Sources say a man, who arrived at the office wearing an over coat and a helmet, threatened the village officer and poured the liquid which he possessed to the floor before setting fire to it.
After igniting the fire, he locked the village office from inside. Witnesses said that the youth, who escaped after the staff shouted, has received serious injuries. Venugopal suffered burns while attempting to stop the man.
The police said that they hace received clues about the culprit.
There are also reports that a three member gang was behind the attack. Among the three, the man wearing the helmet ignited the fire in the office.
Village officer Mohanan, office staff Prabhakaran and Pushpam have been injured in the incident. Mini, Chitralekha and Vijayakumari, who are employees of the homeo hospital functioning in the village office building, were also injured.
District Collector Biju Prabhakar said that 75 per cent of documents were burnt in the fire.
"Since the copies of the documents are available at the Taluk office, majority of the documents can be recovered, he said.
The collector also revealed that the village officer faced several issues regarding the distribution of caste certificate.
The police have asked the forensic department’s help to find out which liquid was used for igniting the fire.
