BJP wants AFSPA to be imposed in Kannur
Thiruvananthapuram: BJP leaders led by O Rajagopal MLA met Governor P Sathasivam on Saturday to request him to impose Armed Forces (Special Powers) Acts (AFSPA) in Kannur district.
The BJP leaders met the Governor in the wake of the murder of RSS activist Choorakkad Biju on Friday.
The BJP leaders informed the Governor that the police have failed in ensuring peace in Kannur and violence is perpetrated with government help. Instead of intervening to stop the violence, the government is keeping aloof. In this scenario, AFSPA, that grants special powers to the Indian Armed Forces, should be imposed.
14 political murders have occurred in the state since the government assumed charge. Among the dead, 13 persons are RSS/ BJP activists. Hence, this cannot be viewed as an isolated incident. RSS activists are being hunted down. The centre's intervention is required in this regard, the leaders told the Governor.
Biju's killing drew a strong reaction from BJP chief Kummanam Rajasekharan yesterday. Kummanam called for the imposition of AFSPA in Kannur t in view of the "frequent" attacks on the workers of the saffron party.
"Since the government has failed to curb the violence, AFSPA should be imposed in Kannur to maintain law-and-order. CPI(M) workers are unleashing violence against their political rivals and even the chief minister has failed to control them," alleged Rajasekharan. He also claimed that the ruling party in Kerala had "unilaterally broken" the peace accord.
