BJP leader Dr Rachel Mathai passes away


Thiruvananthapuram: BJP’s national executive committee member and renowned health expert Dr Rachel Mathai passed away in Bengaluru on Thursday. She was 96. The funeral will be held on Saturday at Madiwala in Bengaluru.

Dr Rachel who hails from Kerala was born to Pathanamthitta couple Mathai and Thankamma.

She cleared MBBS from Columbo University with the first rank and took MRCP and FRCP from England. After her studies, she worked in Sri Lanka and UK. Later, she joined government service in Kerala.

Rachel was very proactive in the public sphere and strived against issues faced by women and elderly citizens.Since 1984, she has been in limelight as a BJP loyalist.

In 1987 and 1991 she contested the elections on BJP party ticket from Thiruvananthapuram. She maintained a good bond with BJP leaders like LK Advani and M Venkaiah Naidu.
