Alappuzha: BJP assumed power in Thripperumthura, the panchayat of Opposition Leader Ramesh Chennithala. BJP’s president candidate won after the Congress members stayed away from election. Bindu Pradeep fielded by NDA was elected as panchayat president.

As no political front had a clear majority, election to choose panchayat president was held thrice in Thripperumthura. Though CPM candidate Vijayamma Philendran was elected two times with the support of Congress, she resigned as per party direction.

Congress supported LDF candidate in order to stop BJP from winning the election. However, as Congress stayed away from election in the third round, BJP candidate won and was elected as panchayat president.

In the local body polls, UDF and NDA had won 6 seats each and LDF won 5 seats. Since the president post was reserved for SC women, Congress did not have any eligible candidate. The panchayat was ruled by LDF last time.
