Idukki: Bishop Mar Mathew Anikuzhikattil, the first and emeritus bishop of Idukki diocese, passed away here in the wee hours on Friday. The 78-year-old bishop was under treatment for age-related ailments. He breathed his last at a private hospital here around 1.38 am on Friday.
His body is being kept at the mortuary of a private hospital in Muvattupuzha.
Acclaimed as the first bishop of Idukki diocese, he served the diocese for 15 years from 2003 to 2018.
He retired from his post at the age of 75 following the canon law.
Being an active person in land protests in Idukki, Mar Mathew Anikuzhikattil also served as the trustee of High-range protection committee.
He raised voice to protect the rights of the believers and farmers who migrated to the district for more than a decade.
