Kottayam: Major Archbishop of the Syro-Malabar Church Cardinal Mar George Alencherry appeared as a witness in a court here. He was summoned to clarify information regarding the rape case against the former head of the Latin Catholic Diocese of Jalandhar Bishop Franco Mulakkal.
The rape survivor, who is a nun, had filed a complaint against Alencherry in 2017. The Cardinal reportedly told the nun that he cannot intervene as the Bishop belongs to Latin Church. Alencherry is one of the 80 witnesses in the case.
The examination of witnesses is expected to continue throughout October at the Kottayam Additional Sessions court.
Special Public Prosecutors Adv Jithesh J Babu, Adv Subin K Varghese appeared for the prosecution.
