Kochi: Lakshadweep administration banned transportation of frozen chicken from Kerala in view of the bird flu outbreak at many locations in the state. The administration has issued strict guidelines not to transport frozen chicken in ships and barges to the island.

The major portion of the chicken sold in Lakshadweep are transported from Kerala as only a few minor poultry farms are operating in the island.

Last week, the transportation of poultry and eggs from Kerala was banned in Nilgiris, which is the border district in Tamil Nadu.

Most of the avian flu cases are reported in Kottayam district. The samples were collected and tested at National Institute of High Security Animal Diseases Laboratory in Bhopal when the domestic fowls in the farms in Vechoor, Neendor and Arpookara died en mass. The presence of H5N1 avian influenza virus has been confirmed in the tests. Following this, over 10,000 domestic birds were culled in the region.
