Kochi: The Minister of Public Works Department PA Mohammed Riyas took mass action against the officials in connection to the death of a youth in a bike accident in Thrippunithura. The executive engineer in charge of bridges in Ernakulam, assistant executive engineer, assistant engineer and overseer were suspended under pending investigation. The minister issued suspension orders based on the report submitted by the chief engineer.

Police had registered a case against a construction contractor for the accident. The complaint lodged in relation to the case accuses the lapses of the contractor and officials responsible for the bike accident which claimed the life of Vishnu at Market road in Thrippunithura.

The accident happened when Eroor natives Vishnu and Adarsh were crossing the bridge on a bike in the morning. The locals alleged that there were no warning boards placed to stop the travellers from heading to the under-construction bridge, except two barrels.

The under-construction canal overbridge is not connected to the roads. When people rushed to the spot after hearing the sound of the accident, the youth were already lying in the ditch. They immediately informed the police and it was the cops who took the youths to the hospital. The lumbering pace of the construction works has resulted in the death of a youth here, opined the onlookers.
