Bharathapuzha river banks becoming a haven for anti-socials
Thrithala (Palakkad): The banks of the Bharathapuzha river have become a centre for illicit drinking. The illegal practice is more commonly found near and around the Velliyamkallu Heritage Park especially during night. Many people arrive here in groups for drinking.
These groups of alcoholics regularly camp near the sand ridges and rocky areas of the river. Most of the street lights on the bridge and the road have stopped working providing a favorable situation for these groups.
Large number of liquor bottles were recovered near the Velliyamkallu – Kodikunnu road. Visitors coming to the river and fishermen are pained to see the bottles floating on the waters.
The plastic bottles and covers dumped in the river creates serious hazard to the environment. Locals have demanded police patrolling in and around the heritage park and river banks.
