BevCo in crisis as liquor sales drop
Alappuzha: Liquor sales through Beverages Corporation has dropped considerably. There was a daily income of Rs 35 crore on an average which is now mere Rs 6-7 crore per day. Among the 270 shops of the corporation, only 265 are functioning. Most of them are facing loss.
A liquor shop can be run profitably if there is an income of Rs 11 lakh per day on an average. Majority of the shops are having sales for only Rs 2-3 lakh. According to the staff, the arrival of the app resulted in the crisis. With this, the consumers lost the freedom to choose the brand, shop and time of their choice.
The customers of the Beverages Corporation are mostly common people and many of them are unable to use smart phones. Due to this, the habit of buying liquor after work was stopped. When the slot is booked through the app, the time allotted is before 1 pm. The staff are sitting idle during rest of the time.
BevCo receives 20 percent of the sales. The salary of the employees and rent of the shop are paid using this amount. Even after the income dropped, none of these expenses decreased. With this, the corporation is facing loss.
Meanwhile, Beverages Corporation MD Sparjan Kumar said that the problems of the app will be resolved soon and the delay occurrs due to COVID restrictions.
