Students posing before the solar-powered autorickshaw
Kottayam: A group of students pursuing eighth semester electrical and electronics engineering at Global Academy of Technology, Bengaluru turned stars at an exhibition in Kottayam’s Saintgits College of Engineering with their solar-powered autorickshaw.
Named as ‘Solar E-Rickshaw’, the three-wheel vehicle relies on its roof for fuel. The roof consists of four solar panels that are connected to a Lithium-Iron battery. It can carry up to 500 kgs(3 passengers + 1 driver) and run at a speed of 35 km/ hr. Interestingly, the vehicle neither emits smoke nor produces noise. The vehicle can be powered with electricity in the absence of solar energy. The battery life is 15 years while the panel has a life of 10 years.
The brains behind this solar-powered autorickshaw are KA Ajay, BV Hemanthkumar, C Hithesh, AR Nikhitha and Bridhi M Jain. They exhibited this model as their project after compiling inputs from various experts, business personalities and autorickshaw drivers in Bengaluru. They designed it with an aim to rectify the drawbacks in the existing solar-powered autorickshaws.
The total cost incurred for the development of the model is Rs 1.3 lakhs. The students took one year to develop the model.
