Kannur: Consuming beer in summer will not cool the body, instead it can make one feel more warmer. However, the sales of beer have witnessed a steep increase, perhaps out of the misconception that a cold beer can chill down the body temperature in scorching heat.

As per the data revealed by BEVCO, the sales of beer have climbed this year compared to January and February 2022. The liquor traders in Mahe informed that the sales of beer increased by 50 per cent during certain days.

Usually beer has an alcohol content ranging from 4.5 to 8 per cent and this gets absorbed in the body quickly than water. Therefore, beer consumption can result in dehydration, especially during summer.

According to Dr PK Sasidharan (retired professor, Kozhikode Medical College), drinking beer to quench thirst is not a good habit in summer. Drinking water as per the body temperature will be ideal, he said.
