Thiruvananthapuram: Officials of the Kerala forest department are attempting to rescue a bear which fell into a well on a private property at Vellanad here. The bear is trapped in the well on the property of Kannampally native Prabhakaran on Wednesday night.

The bear had grasped itself on the wall of the well to avoid drowning. The officials, who arrived for the rescue mission, tranquilised the animal at around 9.30 am. A rope net was installed in the well to lift the animal. But the bear gradually slipped away and drowned under the influence of the tranquiliser. Currently, officials are pumping out the water in the well to remove the animal. The bear's life is in danger.

The bear is assumed to have arrived to catch the fowls rearing at Prabhakaran’s house. It caught two fowls and fell into the well while attempting to capture the third fowl.

The natives who rushed to the scene after hearing the sound passed the information to the forest department.
