Bats found dead en masse at Cherthala
Cherthala: In an incident spreading panic among people, a large number of bats were found dead at Kuruppankulangara in Cherthala. Though the local people are petrified on hearing about the en masse death of bats due to the Nipah scare, health department officials affirmed that there is no need for fear.
Hundreds of bats were found dead in an abandoned coir godown which is an uninhabited place at the South Cherthala panchayat of Kuruppankulangara Kannikaad region. There were hundreds of bats present in the isolated godown and when a bad smell started emanating from the place, it was examined and several dead bats were found.
Authorities of the Health department inspected the place after coming to know about the incident. The dead bats were buried and the samples sent for examination.
The doors of the godown which remained open had closed abruptly due to the strong winds the other day. According to preliminary investigation, the bats would have suffocated to death.
