Basheer's body laid to rest; journalist fraternity pays a tearful adieu
Kozhikode: Condolences poured in for the Thiruvananthapuram bureau chief of Siraj newspaper, KM Basheer, who was killed by the young bureaucrat Sriram Venkitaraman by his reckless driving yesterday. The final rites of Basheer was held at Cheruvannur, Perambra.
Meanwhile, people from various walks of life, including Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan, state ministers Kadakampally Surendran, E Chandrashekharan, P Thilothaman, Opposition leader in the assembly Ramesh Chennithala, CPI state secretary Kanam Rajendran and other MLAs paid their respects to Basheer after his mortal remains were brought to the Press Club in Thiruvananthapuram.
The mortal remains were kept at Thiruvananthapuram Press Club, his birth place Vaniyannur at Tirur and in Kozhikode for the journalist fraternity to pay homage.
The body was later taken to his home town at Vatakara in Kozhikode for the burial, which was held on Saturday night.
Basheer began his stint as a local reporter for Siraj in Tirur, Malappuram and served as staff reporter at Malappuram. Later he rose to the level of bureau chief in Thiruvananthapuram and had a composed nature. The Kerala Media Academy had honoured him last week for his best reports on Assembly stories.
