Bars to remain closed during Thiruvonam day in Kerala
Thiruvananthapuram: There will not be any sale of liquor through bars on Thiruvonam day. Since holidays were declared for Bevco and Consumerfed outlets earlier, the government released the order declaring holiday for bars as well. Last year, the government had given holiday for all liquor outlets in the state. This has been made applicable for bars as well this year.
The opening of bars last year had caused a lot of criticism. There were allegations that outlets were closed to help the bar owners reap profits during Onam. This year, bars have been asked to remain closed to avoid large gatherings in the context of COVID-19.
Bars will be reopen only on Thursday after it is closed on Sunday.
Monday is Thiruvonam. Tuesday is September 1 and hence a dry day in the state. September 2, Wednesday, is the birth anniversary of Sree Narayana Guru. Liquor sales have been banned on that day as well in the state.
